Google ranked number one by MediaGuardian

The founders of leading search engine Google have been awarded the number one spot in this year’s prestigious MediaGuardian 100.

After creating the search engine ten years ago, Sergey Brin and Larry Page have beaten tough competition to take first place in the industry’s annual guide the most powerful people in the media. The ranking, now in its eight year, reviews all sectors of the media, including advertising, marketing and digital media.

Now one of the biggest multinational companies in the world, Google dominates the UK online search market and poses a difficult challenge to rivals Yahoo! and MSN. Google also owns video sensation YouTube, and expanded its brand by launching Google Earth and Google Maps. The article in this week’s MediaGuardian suggests that the current significance of search engine optimisation (SEO) is a sign of Google’s success, stating that ‘if you want to be seen, then you have to be seen on Google’.

The co-founders number one position is a yet another mark of the continued dominance of the search engine, with Google personnel topping the broadsheet’s ranking for the last three years. Brin and Page took prime position in 2006 before being replaced by chief executive Eric Schmidt the following year.

Google offers both free and Pay Per Click search listings, and its advertising revenue is expected to exceed ITV’s by the end of this year.

Big changes at Yahoo!

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 by Matthew Phelan

Steve Butterfield a co-founder of photo-sharing website Flickr has become the 4th senior executive to resign at the search engine Yahoo! within the last few weeks. Other top execs to resign include Qi Lu, Brad Garlinghouse, and Vish Makhijani.

To make the resignation even more bizarre it has been rumored that copies of Steve’s resignation letter have now surfaced online. The letter is reported to finish "I will be spending more time with my family, tending to my small but growing alpaca herd and of course getting back to working with tin, my first love. Your old tin-smithing friend and colleague, Stewart Butterfield."

The resignations are likely to be linked to Microsoft’s failed takeover bid and Google’s proposed joint advertising initiative

AOL UK partner with Russell Grant

Sunday, October 5th, 2008 by Matthew Phelan

AOL, UK have partnered with Russell Grant to launch a new horoscope channel. The channel allows you to gain daily, weekly and monthly horoscopes through video. It is a good example of how search engines are increasingly offering content instead of just finding content as in the past. Such partnerships are now common among the search engines and analysts predict the trend to continue.

This is yet another example of “content is king” and it is good advice for all websites to follow. 4Ps Marketing offers a “video for SEO” service and we expect video to increase in its importance for search engines. If you have any questions about our “video for SEO” service then please contact us on 0207 486 5186.
