Google’s results vary

Friday, June 26th, 2009 by Matthew Phelan

"My PC at work gives me different results from my PC at home!"

It’s neither obvious nor clear to the average Google user that search results for the same query can vary depending on which data centre Google uses to fetch results. This means that at any one time two different set of search results can be seen simultaneously for the same search query, by two different computers using the same connection.
But what does this mean for the SEO industry, and users alike? It simply means that users see different search results at different times throughout a period of time, until all data centres are updated.

Google Webmasters answers this question

"Occasionally, fluctuation in search results is the result of differences in our data centers. When you perform a Google search, your query is sent to a Google data center in order to retrieve search results. There are numerous data centers, and many factors (such as geographic location and search traffic) determine where a query is sent. Because not all of our data centers are updated simultaneously, it’s possible to see slightly different search results depending on which data center handles your query."

Knowing this is essential for both the SEO agency & the SEO client. The important message is to measure SEO trends over time. Day to day SERPs (search engine results pages) fluctuations are normal but we must look at results over a longer period to really understand them.

Michael Jackson dies – Social Networking effects

Michael Jackson – Social Networking effects

Everyone this morning is in shock that a legend has died after suffering a cardiac arrest yesterday lunchtime in Los Angeles. It was originally reported that Michael Jackson was in a coma, however Michael’s brother later reported that the legend had passed away.

Already social media sites such as Facebook and twitter have been overwhelmed with updates and tributes to the star. These started late last night when the first reports of Michael Jackson being rushed to hospital began. After speaking with many friends and colleagues this morning it seems that a vast majority of people were informed of Michael Jackson’s death via a social media platform. This demonstrates the importance of Social Media – it is now a regular source of information as well as a network for friends to stay in contact.

Internet Marketing Companies

How to choose the right internet marketing company

There are a large number of internet marketing companies in the market place so when trying to choose a company to place your business with it can often be overwhelming. In fact, some people are so overwhelmed they make no choice at all and continue on using their own resources! Although there is a lot to take in, most businesses would benefit from the services of a one of the reputable internet marketing companies out there – the key is to choose the right one!

Whether you are looking to choose an internet marketing company or already have an existing provider it would be worthwhile to keep the following points in mind:

  • Your website is a place for you to advertise to your customers. Remember this when you are writing website content: it’s a fine line between writing for your site and for the search engines , do not be tempted to overuse keywords.
  • Is the agency offering to improve your site rankings or give your company a web presence?
  • Have they promised your site 1st page rankings? No agency can promise you this. If they have it will be worth finding out what techniques they are planning on using. Black hat techniques will give your site fantastic results in a very short space of time HOWEVER, they will also ensure that your site is banned by the major search engines such as Google.
  • Does the agency continually invest in R&D? The internet marketing industry is fast paced and it is imperative that companies keep up to date with what is and could be up and coming.
  • Will the agency be prepared to report to you on a regular basis? Internet marketing is an ongoing project therefore it requires regular meetings and updates to ensure campaigns do not lose focus.
  • Is the agency willing to provide you with references before you make your final decision?
  • How long is the contract? If the internet marketing agency is confident in the results they are able to provide for you then it will not be necessary for them to tie you in to a long contract.

If you are in the process of researching internet marketing companies or you are not happy with the service your current agency is offering why not give us a call to have a chat with one of our team. Alternatively, go to our Contact Us page and send us an email .

Muscular Dystrophy Campaign

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 by Matthew Phelan

The following article has nothing to do with search engine marketing & is purely to raise awareness of Muscular Dystrophy.

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign works tirelessly to support the sufferers and families with muscular dystrophy.

Their work has four main focuses:

• providing free practical and emotional support
• funding world-class research to find effective treatments and cures
• campaigning to raise awareness and bring about change
• awarding grants towards the cost of specialist equipment, such as powered wheelchairs

There are more than 20 types of muscular dystrophy. They are caused by faults in genes which
lead to progressive muscle weakness because muscle cells break down and are gradually lost.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a very serious condition. Most boys develop the first signs of difficulty in walking at the age of 1 to 3 years and are usually unable to run or jump like their peers, they often struggle to climb stairs and need to use a banister for support. By about 8 years old, boys become unable to walk and by their late teens the condition is severe enough to shorten life expectancy.

Unfortunately no cure has yet been discovered although there are ways to manage the condition, which help with its complications. These have had a very important impact on the quality and length of life that can be expected with this condition.

The following is an email from an associate of 4Ps Marketing

Dear All,

As you are probably aware, over the Easter break our little boy was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. In ‘non-specialist’ terms, this means that his genetic make-up prevents him from producing the stuff that his muscles need to repair and rebuild themselves. As a consequence, instead of getting stronger with age; the muscles get weaker over time. Not surprisingly the disease has a catastrophic impact on the quality and the quantity of life that can be enjoyed by those that suffer with it.

There is currently no cure for the disease, but the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign (MDC) continues to work tirelessly to promote research into treating the condition. The MDC also provides an invaluable lifeline of information, support and guidance for all families that have to learn to deal with MD. The support and care that Rachael and I have received so far has been brilliant; we would not have had this had the MDC not been there to co-ordinate, fund and promote treatment of MD.

It is a huge frustration that there is so little that Rachael and I can do as parents to make things better for Alfie. One of the few things that we can do is to promote awareness and understanding of MD and to contribute in any ways that we can to the fantastic work that is done by the MDC. With this in mind, I shall be running the Great North Run in September in aid of MDC.

I have set up a ‘justgiving’ page to make donating as simple and ‘painless’ as possible. You should be able to click on the link and then follow the step-by-step instructions to make a donation. All monies are simply paid straight to the charity. I fully appreciate that many of you already contribute and give in many different ways to many other equally worthy causes, but any donations in support of my efforts would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read this (I have tried to keep things brief!).

4Ps Marketing’s Online PR consultant Emma Pilcher completes Race for Life

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 by Hannah Miller

I don’t know about anyone else but my Sunday Mornings generally follow a familiar pattern of a late lay in, breakfast followed by a large coffee and one of the Sunday morning papers. However, this Sunday I managed to drag myself out of bed around the 8am mark for a very worthy cause, Race for Life.

A few friends and I decided a couple of months ago that we would participate in the sponsored walk to raise money for the Charity.

Being a Kent girl at heart we signed up for the Folkestone Race for Life, Sunday 21st June 2009. On the actual morning sky was a little overcast but stayed dry and everyone was in high spirits. We arrived at 10am for the optional warm up activities. It was quite a unique sight – a group of ladies of all ages, primarily dressed in pink (some in fancy dress) all waving their arms and legs in time with the music was quite impressive to save the least.

It was only when the race got underway you really got to appreciate the full sense of occasion. 3000 plus women walking, jogging and running all prompted by slightly different reasons but the same cause. On the way round we were alongside 3 Smurfs, several disco divas, a couple of fairies, mums, daughters and grannies. The spectators and Race Wardens were fantastic support clapping and cheering everyone on their way round.

Upon completing the race participants were presented with a Race for Life medal and goodie bag. Having raised £240 I left the event with a real sense of achievement; watch this space for the next challenge!

4Ps Marketing actively encourages employees to participate in charitable events & I would like to thank the team for all their support. As an agency we work on several SEO / PPC campaigns for charities / NGO’s & I find this work rewarding from a personal level.
