A Campaign on Facebook Leads to High School Walkout
Protesting against education cuts, thousands of students from New Jersey have staged a mass walkout from their High Schools.
The campaign on Facebook was founded by Michelle Ryan Lauto, a student at Pace University who went to a High School in New Jersey. Over 15,000 students responded “Yes” to the invitation but it remains unclear how many actually took part in the walkout.
Lauto started the campaign on Facebook in response to an announcement by Governor Chris Christie, stating that $820 million in educational funding for next year would be cut.
The event has gained widespread attention amongst those using social media and presumably even those who are not. According to Mashable , this campaign on Facebook has led to a flurry of media interest, including a camera crew interviewing Lauto at her house.
Whether or not this event leads to any action being taken, it remains a testament to the uses for Facebook and other forms of social media growing beyond their origins.
