A security breach waiting to happen?
Social media has managed to work itself into a number of headlines over recent months and this week is no exception.
Most people would not bat an eyelid at setting up a Facebook page to keep up to date with friends and family. We post details of ourselves including our names, where live, where we go on holiday and recent photos. However, The Mail on Sunday broke the news yesterday that the wife of the new Chief of MI6, Sir John Sawyers, posted family details and photos on her Facebook page. It was stated that the page had “virtually no restrictions” on it. Experts commented that there could now be a need to “rehouse the family” and the security of the children will need to reviewed. Liberal Democrat, Ed Davey has called for an inquiry.
Also, reported today has been the investigation of Primark into a number of comments made by its staff on their Facebook pages. The derogatory comments were aimed at the discount clothing retailer’s customers. Other large chains have also conducted such investigations into comments made by their staff, such as Tesco at the beginning of the year.
Perhaps it is just that this new element of the digital era is taking some people a little time to adjust to. It may be exciting to stay in touch and give your opinion but it is worthwhile to remember to post responsibly.
