Social Media Strategy – Why it matters

Companies big and small are coming round towards engaging with social networks and flirting with the idea of building a company presence on social tools such as Twitter and Facebook.

Social networks are becoming entrenched in everyday life, companies often are hasty to establish a Twitter or Facebook page – branded with the company logo and contact details. It is all too common for companies to play around with Twitter for a day or two, post a few tweets about promotions etc but then lose interest.

Unless companies actively disband company profiles – they are going to stay there. Just because they’ve lost interest doesn’t mean the branded Twitter / Facebook page isn’t publically searchable and available.

Customers will continue to follow the page, customers will try to engage – they see the presence, but will be ignored.

Company profiles on social media networks need to be in the loop of an integrated social media plan . Social media direction needs to be established, understood and conveyed to all entities commuting through the service to the public.

It is often the case a Twitter or Facebook page is set up by an employee without the consultation and consideration of an overall social media strategy. It is the same as establishing a call centre, publishing the contact numbers but then going for lunch for 6 hours a day, letting the phones ring, ring and ring!

Strategy should include agreed directions on what the company wants the social medium to deliver – A customer service channel? Sales promotions? Company news? The works?. Once decided the direction needs to be resourced – under resourced social media engagement is a common sin, potential clients will become disillusioned and reputations will suffer. Campaigns need to be monitored, tracked and reviewed regularly.

Social media engagement is an incredibly fast, exciting, changing medium. With a considered resourced strategy it can transform how companies engage with potential clients – rocketing online credentials ahead of competitors.

  1. Don’t you need to have graduated with a good B in the social sciences to run a blog such as this?
