Eric Schmidt Google CEO and chairman worked on Google planning management and technology development since 2001. Having spent the last 8 years maintaining Google’s growth and building their corporate infrastructure Eric Schmidt’s interview on the future of the internet was very informative.
Speaking at the Gartner Symposium in Orlando Eric Schmidt claimed that in five years time the internet will be a ‘radically different’ place. His claims included the fact that the internet will be largely dominated by Chinese language and social media content.
The speed of the internet according to Schmidt will also be vastly different and within five years broadband looks set to be performing at well above 100MB. Computers will also be capable of much more than they are at present, and with five years predicted to equal ten in terms of progress (Moore’s Law) this looks set to be dramatic.
With ‘significant’ revenue being made from YouTube at present Schmidt also sees the future of the internet focusing more on video content; a claim which is also supported by Google’s recent introduction of Google’s Video Ads .
Another important factor of the web’s future will be real-time information which although Google is now able to index (Social Search ) they have no way of ranking it at present. Definitely something they are working on at present. As Google now plans to include real time social media updates in their search results this definitely seems to be a high priority for Google.
Overall Schmidt heralded the future of the internet as shifting more towards user-generated information and that learning to rank this content will be the ‘challenge of the age’.
