Foursquare check-ins hit 40 million
Within a year of launching, social networking site Foursquare has seen its amount of ‘check-ins’ double since last month. This huge increase has taken the sites popularity from 22 to 40 million.
An increase in a site’s popularity is obviously great; and puts Foursquare almost in line with Twitter, and proves the effectiveness of social media . Well this, alongside recent acquisition rumours, have driven Foursquare hype to new levels.
Despite this huge short-term success, a challenging future is on the horizon as Facebook is set to launch its location features this month. The development of this tool within Facebook is unknown as yet, but it may lead to a stall in growth for Foursquare.
If people decide to stick with the old faithful; Facebook, then this will discourage new users from signing up with Foursquare. However, the fact that this new social network is offering a reward basis depending on how often a user attends an event or visits a location, may persuade users to become proactive. Alternatively, Facebook may offer a location platform that lets Foursquare, Gowalla and their ilk build upon Facebook’s massive user-base.
