Google Energy Can Now Buy and Sell Electricity

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted Google Energy, a subsidiary of Google, the right to buy and sell energy at market rates.

Though this does pave the way for Google to become an energy provider, the company claims that their immediate intention is to gain better control over the high energy costs of its data centres and to achieve carbon neutral status.

When the request was made , Spokeswoman for Google Niki Fenwick told CNET:

“Right now, we can’t buy affordable, utility-scale, renewable energy in our markets. We want to buy the highest quality, most affordable renewable energy wherever we can and use the green credits.”

While it may not be part of their immediate plan, the idea of becoming an energy provider has not been ruled out by Google.

“We don’t have any concrete plans,” Fenwick told Fenwick told CNET News in January. “We want the ability to buy and sell electricity in case it becomes part of our portfolio.”
