Google Real-Time Results
The announcement we have all been anticipating has finally emerged today. Google have confirmed their partnership with MySpace and FriendFeed which when coupled with their established deal with Twitter will provide them with the capability to provide the long awaited real-time search function.
Over the next few days this will be rolled out globally in English. This new feature will mean that users entering searches into Google will be shown a search box containing real-time results about their search query. This will come from Twitter, Myspace, FriendFeed and other social networking sites and will be displayed alongside their other Google results.
Only a few real-time search results will be displayed on the main results page but users will be able to click on ‘latest’ results to see a full page of live tweets and other social networking content. These results will move down the page as more discussions on the subject appear in results. As you can see in the image below Google are not displaying shortened URLs for links, instead they use the title of the webpage with the website indicated in grey.
Google Fellow Amit Singhal said “Our real-time search features are based on more than a dozen new search technologies that enable us to monitor more than a billion documents and process hundreds of millions of real-time changes each day.”
This is a large leap for Google as they strive to deliver the “freshest, most comprehensive and relevant search results” it is also a definitive day for social media as it becomes more apparent that this is an essential marketing and brand management tool.
