Its Google’s Swirl

Hot on the trail of Bing’s nifty image search engine comes Google Swirl from Google labs, promising to help users have fun whilst refining their image search!

A brilliant application that’s easy to use, currently equipped with 200,000 keyword query functions. As you would with an ‘ordinary’ image search type in the search query (the example uses ‘impressionism’) which would return thumbnails of relevant images for the search query:

Clicking on an image thumbnail throws up a cluster of relevant images that ‘swirl‘ into view, additional sub-groups branch out related results that can be further explored until a desired image is found. The interface is similar to that of Wonder Wheel.

At present image search engines are dependent on the image metadata or description entered by users on their websites or social media pages. Swirl is a work in progress that is not yet available in Google’s image search engine, it promises to add a new dimension to image searches.
