Facebook Celebrates its Sixth Birthday
Many people can’t imagine life without social networking and Facebook in particular.
But if you were using a computer before 2004, there was indeed a time without Facebook. The wildly popular social networking site was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, along with his college roommates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.
The site was originally located at thefacebook.com and membership was a privilege initially restricted to the students of Harvard College. This was gradually expanded to most universities in Canada and America, finally being opened up in 2006 to anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address.
Today, Facebook remains the most popular social networking website in several English-speaking countries, with the term “Facebooking” creeping into common usage much as the word “Googled” did.
Happy Birthday Facebook and here’s to many more years of Facebooking to come!
