Impact Of JavaScript In SEO

Use of Java Script in HTML has been an on-going debate in the SEO world. A JavaScript is a set of code that enables certain actions to be carried out on the server side when initiated by a client. It is carried out by instructing the server to execute a specific function as a comment in the HTML.

The best feature of Java Script is that it enables the web developer to manage and maintain a website easily. But this comes at a greater cost, if misused.

As comments in HTML are ignored by the search engines, any navigational links provided via JavaScript gets ignored and so does the content. This is not good for the page rank and trustworthiness of the site in any manner as visible links and relevant content are the most important factors that affect the page rank. This is one of the main reasons why SEO agencies like 4Ps Marketing recommend avoiding use of Java Script. JavaScript also tends to increase the loading time of the page which again impacts the overall optimisation of the web page. This can however be reduced by externalising the function and calling on it only when required by the client.

Another issue is Google assumes that the site is possibly providing different content and navigational links in an effort to mislead the user as it is not accessible by the search engines. This is mainly because dodgy gambling and Adult sites exploit this feature, giving java scripts a bad reputation. A good way to avoid this is to ensure having normal HTML navigational links on the page and remove navigation from JavaScript.

In the case of drop down menus and other similar dynamic features, DHTML and CSS could be used over JavaScript.

To make things clear, the impact of Java script is not massive if implemented the right way giving importance to attributes like load time, search engine-visible navigational links and unique content. Most importantly, do not use sneaky JavaScript redirects.
