Keyword Based Advertising for Twitter
The digital media world has been shaken up today, as developments in social media have been announced. It has been confirmed that Twitter is set to launch a business model based on Google Adwords, through which they will be able to carry out keyword based advertising .
Twitter’s new advertising platform, ‘cleverly’ named Promoted Tweets will display ads based on keywords in Twitter search queries. The ads will “show up when Twitter users search for keywords that the advertisers have bought to link to their ads,” the New York Times stated.
“The idea behind Promoted Tweet s is that we want to enhance the communications that companies are already having with customers on Twitter,” said Twitter’s CFO, Dick Costolo.
One of the more intriguing opportunities Promoted Tweets offer advertisers is the ability to use it during a so-called ‘Twitter Crisis’, i.e. when Twitter has been used to expose misdemeanours of huge corporate companies; as Paperchase experienced only recently.
Additionally, Twitter plans to extend Promoted Tweets into the stream, meaning Twitter’s users will get their first taste of forced ad viewing. The reaction should be interesting to follow.
The advantage of using keyword based advertising is it is much more target driven; so the user will only receive results for what they search for; this may sound obvious but there has to be some sort of platform in place to make sure that this works effectively.
It will be even more interesting to see from an advertiser’s perspective how much Twitter will be charging for this keyword based advertising service.
So in short Twitter will make money; businesses will make money (if the advertising works)! And, users will receive results for what they’re searching for……so all in all, everyone’s happy! Good move Twitter!
