MySpace Status Updates to Appear in Google Results

Status updates that are posted publically on social networking website MySpace will now appear in Google search results.

These results will appear mostly in Google’s real-time search engine, which already features content originating from Twitter and FriendFeed. Searchers can access real-time results by selecting the “updates” or “latest” filters under “options”.

Aside from the benefits this gives to the searcher, this arrangement is mutually beneficial for the parties involved. Social networking and micro-blogging services have experienced a recent surge in popularity and it is important for Google to adapt to this. For MySpace, the social networking website could potentially benefit from the additional visibility. In terms of popularity, MySpace lost the top spot to Facebook in 2008 and remains in second place two years later.

According to a blog post by MySpace Co-President Mike Jones, the real time results in Google will include news, photos and blog posts.

Jones said:

“Empowering our audience to share, discover and showcase content – whether it’s music, movies or games – is core to the MySpace experience. This partnership increases our users’ ability to share and showcase content across the open Web and gives people outside the MySpace network even more ways to discover new content.”
