Twitter Launches Official Tweet Button
Twitter is to launch the official Tweet button, aiming to make it easier and more convenient to share content on the popular social media website.
In documents acquired by Mashable, it is suggested that the official Tweet button will aim to be the most comprehensive counter of how many times your URL has been tweeted and comes as a single line of code, in three different sizes, each with several options for configuration.
Similarly to other buttons available, a lot of the power of the official Tweet button lies in the fact that the user is not directed away from the website in order to tweet. What the official Tweet button means for companies such as Tweetmeme is currently unclear. Tweetmeme currently powers most of the retweet buttons visible on the web and it is possible that the official Tweet button will push them aside. However, as Mashable speculates, it is also possible that Twitter and Tweetmeme have an agreement of some description.
Whatever it means for Tweetmeme, it does indicate that Twitter is aware of one of the challenges that faces any site of its nature; that of a shiny new upstart becoming more popular. The launch of this new Tweet button can be likened to various Facebook changes that have been made, such as the universal “Like” button, designed to spread the website’s presence beyond its own domain.
