SEO | What, How & When
SEO is probably the most talked about topics on our beloved world wide web. Yet when I’m talking to someone at my local pub, the word SEO comes across as Greek, but cool! So, I thought its best to reiterate in the simplest possible way and explain SEO all over again.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation which deals with enhancing and managing a website to be listed by major search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc on the web. For example, if you are looking for “SEO agency”, you expect to find the most relevant website that can help you find a solution/answer to the question you might have in mind.
So, how do these websites get listed and on what basis are they ranked?? This is where SEO comes in. SEO professionals and experts in the field tweak the website so that the website starts to rank for the most relevant search. Common and most popular practices are keywords research, content optimisation, link building and Meta optimisation amongst many others. You should expect to hear ‘Content is king’ when talking to a SEO expert as content is the factor that is measured against relevance in order to rank appropriately.
But, a bigger question is when to have a SEO strategy in place. Simplest answer, when the website is complete. An honest suggestion would be to have a play with optimising the website yourself if the website is not too large and you have the necessary resources. There is plenty of information on the web to help you get started. However, if your website is very large and entirely commercial, then the earlier you adopt an SEO strategy, the better. What would be best for your website is if you plan SEO right whilst in the development stage.
Last but not the least, measure your efforts and monitor the progress with pre-defined goals and targets of the website. Assign a monetary value to goals if your website is non e-commerce.

Great article – personally I feel that SEO is something many organisations feel they can do once and leave. It is about making sure you either have a strategy or partnering with a good SEO Agency.
I agree with you Matt. Planning and Strategising is most important.
