Social Media Giant Facebook Going Places
Facebook might soon start using mapping and GPS technologies to go ‘Places’ with its users.
This means that you will be able to share your location in real time with your friends along with information as to where you are heading and the speed of your travel.
Although in the ‘exploration’ stage, this could mean that more easily accessible information would be made available when you reach a recognised place of your choice. For example, if you arrive at a pizza hut, you can find information on the offers in that particular store and also let your friends know what you decided to order in real time!
With over a hundred million users, this is seen as a potential next BIG thing in the social media world that could unlock a host of benefits to many organisations in the leisure, travel and tourism industry. On the other hand, foursquare.com that works on the similar lines but based on ‘checking in’ just reached a million users and hit 40 million ‘check-ins’ almost acting as a real time status updates. With user ranking and rating on the many venues visited by its users, businesses are tying up to promote their services to their mobile customers.
The word is the air is that many advertisers are holding out for something like ‘Places’ to be more accessible to their target markets and be able to be most relative to trends in the real world.
The next question to be asking is, ‘Will Social Media Optimisation demand more attention than ever?’ and if YES at all, ‘how are we positioning ourselves in this fierce fight to be the FIRST?’
