S.E.O & SEO – How do abbreviations affect SEO and SEO Tips on how to optimise towards abbreviations?

Friday, June 4th, 2010 by Hannah Miller

During some keyword research recently I was looking further into abbreviations. Lots of product names, company names and general online jargon is abbreviated. As with general search terms, different Googlers will search in different ways. So heres a few seo tips on how to optimise correctly.

So what’s the general rule when a keyword has an abbreviation?

The general rule when it comes to targeting keywords which have an abbreviation version as well is like many other search engine optimisation techniques – it’s about balance. Where staff may use an abbreviation on a day to day basis it doesn’t mean that potential customers know what you mean.

How do I adopt that SEO strategy?

It’s important to encourage onsite content writers to use balance. It can be important to research search volumes for your keywords beforehand. Tip: You can do this using the Google keyword tool. Although the Google keyword tool is only an indicator it can help you to understand how users are searching for your content.
The next step is to incorporate those different keywords within your content at a proximity of about 5%. But don’t overdo it or it will be seen as keyword stuffing (which is a big no no).

S.E.O. or SEO?

Some people search for abbreviations using punctuation such as full stops or dashes, but please beware that Google states it ignores punctuation such as this when performing searches.
Therefore if I were to search for “sustainable S.E.O” and “sustainable SEO” the results are as follows:

SEO Search results

From the above screenshots you can see that Google has provided the same results for both keywords. So the SEO tip here is don’t worry about optimising towards the Googlers using full stops as it will not favour your site anymore or less.

4Ps Marketing have always pushed the merits of sustainable SEO and it is still as relevant now as when we coined it in 2003. Even now people often question this at exhibitions, conferences and in day to day discussion.

Social bookmarking has become the norm for a large number of internet users. Delicious, which describes itself as the world’s leading social bookmarking service, allows users to tag, save, manage and share online content from one point. Additionally, it can be accessed through any web connection, so you don’t need to be working on your own computer to visit your favourite sites quickly and easily.
So what does this mean for website SEO and how can you take advantage of it? (more…)

Keyword Research

Why should I perform keyword research?

The key aspect to any search engine optimisation process is phase one – Keyword Research. There are many diverse keywords that generate search engine result pages (SERP’s). An SEO engineer’s job is to distinguish which keywords the website should rank for thus gaining targeted traffic to the website.

What is included in the keyword research process?

The "keyword research" process isn’t just typing a few ideas into a keyword tool, it requires consideration of many aspects.

Key questions 4Ps Marketing discuss with clients during keyword research:

• Which keywords do you want users to find your website with?
• Who are your competitors and what are their keywords targets?
• Which keywords have you currently targeted, if any?

A combination of these questions will create a starting point for the research analysis to take place. The keyword research stage is one of the most intense sections of the SEO process because of its importance in the long term SEO strategy. Not only do the clients have to embrace SEO techniques but the SEO executives (like myself) have to adjust to the assortment of businesses we take on board. No client is the same and each have a specific audience they intend to target. It is our job at 4Ps Marketing to pinpoint how to attract and target the right traffic to the website, in order to convert sales/leads/signup’s etc.
