SEO web design

Monday, July 13th, 2009 by Matthew Phelan

Just a quick note on SEO web design…

What is SEO web design?

Building a website that not only looks good and functions well but ranks for your core keywords within search engines such as Google, Yahoo & Bing.

Will 4Ps Marketing build me a website?

Lots of our clients ask us to build their websites which is a very tempting request being a commercial operation. However, our response is "no thanks but I can forward you the details of 3 to 4 very good SEO web designers that will be able to help".

Why do we not build websites?

We are a specialist search engine marketing agency. There are lots of web design agencies that offer very poor SEM & lots of SEM agencies that offer poor website design services. We don’t try and offer every service under the sun as we believe in specialists for specialists areas. Our whole company is built around SEM & we have a network of superb web designers and web developers that we can recommend when a client needs helps in this area.

SEM is a specialist area and to get results its needs to be the core service of any agency that wants to deliver superb SEM results. We take over a lot of client accounts from web design agencies trying to offer SEM and every time it is apparent that there has been a lack of focus on SEM.

Michael Jackson dies – Social Networking effects

Michael Jackson – Social Networking effects

Everyone this morning is in shock that a legend has died after suffering a cardiac arrest yesterday lunchtime in Los Angeles. It was originally reported that Michael Jackson was in a coma, however Michael’s brother later reported that the legend had passed away.

Already social media sites such as Facebook and twitter have been overwhelmed with updates and tributes to the star. These started late last night when the first reports of Michael Jackson being rushed to hospital began. After speaking with many friends and colleagues this morning it seems that a vast majority of people were informed of Michael Jackson’s death via a social media platform. This demonstrates the importance of Social Media – it is now a regular source of information as well as a network for friends to stay in contact.

Google now email after a reconsideration request is sent

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 by Hannah Miller

Google have just announced that they are now informing webmasters by email, when a "reconsideration request" has been received. Webmasters who apply for a website to be reconsidered for indexing will at least now know if the request has been acted upon.

A webmaster would submit a website for reconsideration if that website had been previously removed from search engine results pages.

It appears to be a generic email that simply informs the webmasters or SEO executive that the submission was received and will be reconsidered. When Google reconsiders a website for submission it doesn’t mean it WILL be re-indexed. Google will check the website against its guidelines and if it passes, it could reappear in search results.

At 4Ps Marketing we haven’t had to resubmit any websites for reconsideration for our clients BUT we have had to do this for;

a) New clients that had their site banned by Google
b) New clients that had their site banned by Google due to bad advice from other SEO agencies

Care & attention is needed when writing a reconsideration & if you do find yourself in this unfortunate position then please contact us for assistance.

However this is great to see that Google are really starting to listen to feedback from fellow SEO enthusiasts & webmasters.

Google recommends we test the speed of our websites

Friday, June 5th, 2009 by Hannah Miller

Who says loading speed of a website is important?

Google has written on its webmasters blog recommending that all webmasters should download the Firefox add on "Page Speed".

Page Speed can be installed as an extension of the "add on" Firebug on Firefox. It is a powerful tool which measures the speed of your website.

Why should I check my website loading speed?

As search engines are becoming more competitive, rankings are becoming even harder to achieve. Google has to research and implement new parameters to stay ahead of the game.

Google is the "search engine giant" and if they are even considering using loading times to assess website ranking then I’m listening so why shouldn’t you?

Why would it effect rankings?

Surely it must be difficult for Google to find new ways to filter out spammy websites. However using different algorithms to filter results can improve SERP’s and keep Google users happy.

Therefore it may become a ranking factor – if your website loading time is higher than the average your positions could descend.

However what if a website is graphically intense? Obviously the page loading time is longer, but that doesn’t mean the page is spam.

Could it mean lengthy loading times could cause websites to disappear from rankings??

Google Fail

Friday, May 15th, 2009 by Hannah Miller

Google has publicly apologised for the “Crash” that occurred yesterday at around 2.30pm-4.30pm GMT. Google has mentioned that an error occurred and the majority of its traffic was diverted through Asia causing a slowdown. It been named the “Googlefail” because not only was it the popular search engine feature that went down – other features such as Google Mail and Calendar etc became in accessible. Businesses have expressed concern because they have come to rely on Google tremendously and if an “error” such as this can occur well really how safe is Google?

Google Analytics is a tool that many of clients use therefore we have noted as much detail about Googlefail as possible so we can associate the change in our reports.

Googlefail occurred on 15-06-2009 started at roughly 2.30pm GMT although the BBC claims it was around 4.30pm GMT the main problem occurred. By 5pm the majority of users started to experience a faster service again. However Google has mentioned that roughly only 14% of users had this issue.

After reading around on the subject I thought it was quite humorous to find a comment from search engine rival Microsoft Live Search:

“Sympathies to the Google servers. Happens to everyone. But this is why the world needs more than one search engine.” Telegraph 2009

Fair comment to Microsoft, although in Google’s defence the issue was resolved super fast.
