Twitter search tips & tricks
Twitter Search is a very useful tool, provided you know how to use it, because you can find real-time feedback on almost anything. Here are a couple tips & tricks I’ve come across searching twitter that have made the whole twitter search task a lot easier:
If you want to Search Twitter for all the new links about a certain topic (χ) while excluding all of the re-tweeted stuff just search for:
(χ) -rt filter:links (whereby χ is your search term/topic) eg. social media -rt filter:links
This method can yield varying results depending on the terms you use, in theory it should show tweets that mention your search term in a good or bad light. You can use specific terms or even smiley faces, search:
@(χ) (Y)-filter:links (whereby χ is your search term/topic and Y is your smiley face or ‘feeling term) eg. iphone4
-filter:links or iphone4 terrible -filter:links
Another search method that can have varying results, and will need some tweaking depending on your industry, but has a lot of potential. This search helps you find people asking questions about your industry/service/product that you can answer. Search for:
(χ)? -filter:links (whereby χ is your question) eg seo help ? -filter:links
TweetBeat is an add-on for FireFox that brings you recent tweets from whoever (or whatever) is mentioned in the web pages you’re looking at. Just mouse-over the little blue icons inserted next to names to see firsthand updates.
BackTweets is a search engine in which you can enter any URL to see who is linking to that URL in their tweets and with their being so many URL shortening programs out their BackTweets is a great tool for keeping track of who is linking to yours and/or your competitor’s site on Twitter.
