Google has introduced a new way to increase the visibility of your application. It is now possible to have rich snippets of software apps on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). Rich snippets make it possible to view structured data from the user’s web page on SERPs. The beauty of this to software developers is that it gives them a competitive edge through the display of reviews, product descriptions and price when compared to other results.
According to Google, “When you mark up software application information in the body of a web page, Google can identify it and, when users search for apps, use this information to better display your app details in search results”. For mobile phone applications, the user would need to add two extra attributes defining the countries supported.
The screenshot below shows an example of a software application rich snippets.
Using the schema.org mark up language, a brief overview of the mark up used for the rich snippet is shown below.
<span itemprop="name">Angry Birds</span>
<span itemprop="description"> Use the unique powers of the Angry Birds to destroy ...</span>
<img itemprop="image" src=[image link here] </span>
It would also be considered a good SEO practice to optimise the meta data with keywords as well, as these could boost rankings. Once completed, it would be advisable to test the rich snippet using Google’s rich snippet testing tool.
