Online Shopping Statistics, Ecommerce & SEO
Online Shopping Statistics
I came across a great round up of the internet shopping statistics at the IMRG website. Not only do they look at the most popular ecommerce sites but the overall online shopping statistics in the UK.
The IMRG / Hitwise Hot Shops List has been around for four years and gives great insight on how the e-retail market leaders are performing in terms of luring visitors to their sites. Amazon’s has held the number 1 spot of the Hot Shops List since these online shopping statistics were first published in May 2006.
The top ten E-retailers, by visits, in 2010 were:
1. Amazon UK
2. Argos
3. Play.com
4. Apple Computer
5. Tesco.com
6. Amazon.com
7. Marks & Spencer
8. Next
9. Tesco Direct
10. easyJet
The IMRG online shopping statistics indicate that ecommerce was worth £50 billion in 2009, the online sales growth rate was 13% in 2010. The top 3 sectors were Clothing, Footwear, Accessories with Films & Music the top purchases among men while Clothes (surprise, surprise) & Sporting Goods (genuine surprise) were the most popular buys for women. The full online shopping statistics can be found on the IMRG website.
E-Commerce & SEO
Having top rankings for an ecommerce website is crucial for long term success in the online marketing world. Ecommerce sites generally have lower traffic and higher income per visitor than a content site. What this means is that even a small increase in traffic can create a large increase in revenue making SEO vital to the success of an ecommerce website. Good stuff Ashley, what I find very interesting is the top nine are all similar – online / high street goods retailers where as EasyJet are a budget airline! Interesting to see other sectors burst into the top ten!
